How Private Are Your Thoughts? Mentalism on the Street

By Juan Clutterbuck 1 min read

We like to think our thoughts are a safe. The uncomfortable truth is that we leak a huge amount of information without realizing it: with a glance, with a flicker of doubt, with a half-second gesture. In this video I go out on the street to prove it with people I have just met.

I do not read minds. I read people

Let me be clear: I have no powers. What I do is mentalism, a discipline that combines psychology, observation and technique. When it looks like I am guessing a word or a memory, what I am really doing is:

  • Reading body language (microexpressions, the direction of a gaze, breathing).
  • Using suggestion to guide someone, without them noticing, toward an option.
  • Taking advantage of how memory and attention work.

The effect, for the person living it, is indistinguishable from having their mind read. And that feeling is exactly what makes mentalism work so well live.

Your thoughts are private. Your reactions, far less than you think.

Why this shines at an event

On a stage or among the tables at a cocktail reception, this kind of close-up mentalism creates something few things can: it gets people talking to each other. “Did you see what he just did?” travels across the room and breaks the ice better than any forced activity. That is why it fits so well at corporate events, weddings and private celebrations.

If you want your guests to leave talking about something for weeks, write to me and we will tailor it to your audience.
