I Hypnotize Him and He Forgets How to Speak Spanish: What Really Happens in Hypnosis
By Juan Clutterbuck 2 min read
“Forgetting” a language sounds impossible. And yet, in this video you will see someone who, for a few minutes, cannot speak Spanish normally. There is no trick and there are no actors: there is hypnotic suggestion. But it is worth explaining what is really going on, because a lot of nonsense gets said about hypnosis.
Hypnosis is not what you saw on TV
Let us break a few myths once and for all:
- You do not lose control. Nobody does anything under hypnosis that goes radically against their values.
- It is not sleep. It is a state of highly focused attention, similar to when a film “absorbs” you.
- It does not work the same way for everyone. Suggestibility varies a great deal from one person to another.
What does happen is that, with the right guidance, the brain temporarily accepts a new “rule” (for example, that words in Spanish stop flowing) and acts accordingly.
Hypnosis does not give me power over anyone. It only opens a door that the person themselves decides to walk through.
Why I include it in my shows
A well-executed hypnosis demonstration is one of the most striking things a live audience can witness, because it happens to someone from their own group: a coworker, a friend, a wedding guest. That creates a sense of complicity and amazement that no trick with objects can achieve.
At my corporate events and private celebrations, I always use it with consent, with elegance, and without making anyone look foolish. The goal is not to laugh at someone, but to leave the whole room thinking about how flexible the human mind really is.
