My Appearance on Herrera en COPE: Live Mentalism on the Radio
By Juan Clutterbuck 2 min read
Some invitations mark a clear before and after. One of them was the invitation to Herrera en COPE, one of the most listened-to radio programs in Spain. They called me on to talk about mentalism and, above all, to demonstrate it live.
The challenge of doing mentalism on the radio
Mentalism usually enters through the eyes: a look, a gesture, a card. On the radio you have none of that. Only the voice, the timing, and the trust of whoever is listening. That is why it was such a beautiful challenge: I had to rely entirely on suggestion and psychology, with no visual safety net.
Having a media outlet like COPE open its microphones to you is also a sign of trust that I value enormously. Appearing in the press and on the radio is not just promotion: it is a form of credibility that my clients notice when they hire me.
What the radio taught me for events
Working without any image forced me to sharpen what matters most: the connection with the person. And that is exactly the raw material of a good live show, whether on a stage, at the end of a company meal, or among the tables at a wedding.
- Truly listening, not waiting for your turn to speak.
- Building tension with rhythm, not with effects.
- Making the audience the protagonist, never me.
On the radio I discovered that, when you take away the image, the only thing left is trust. And trust is built.
