Is Hypnosis Real? I Tested It With Strangers and Here Is What Happened
By Juan Clutterbuck 1 min read
It is the question I get asked the most: is hypnosis real? The short answer is yes, but not the way you imagine. To show it without any filter, I went out on the street to test it with people who had never met me.
What is real and what is showmanship
Hypnosis is a documented psychological phenomenon: a state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility. It is even used in clinical settings for pain or anxiety. That part is real.
What showmanship adds is rhythm, staging and selection: a good hypnotist knows how to read who responds well to suggestion and build from there. It is not deception; it is craft.
How to recognize a good professional
If you are thinking about hiring someone for an event, be wary of anyone who promises total control over another person’s mind. A serious professional:
- Always works with consent.
- Does not humiliate the volunteers.
- Explains that the person keeps control at all times.
- Adapts the intensity to the audience and the context (a wedding is not the same as a convention).
The difference between amazing and manipulating is respect. That is my red line.
From the street to your event
These videos with strangers are the best school: they confront you with real, unpredictable reactions, with no safety net. Everything I learn there I then bring to shows for companies, weddings and private events, where mentalism and hypnosis combine to create moments people remember long after they leave.
Can you picture something like this at your next celebration? Tell me the details and we will design the experience together.
